Group Psychodynamic Therapy

Understanding Yourself in Relationship with Others

Group psychodynamic therapy offers a unique opportunity to explore emotional patterns, relationship difficulties, and the ways we experience ourselves in connection with others.

While individual therapy allows for deep personal reflection, group therapy brings the relational world into the room. The group becomes a living space where patterns of closeness, distance, trust, conflict, attachment, withdrawal, and repair can be noticed and understood as they unfold.

This type of therapy may be especially meaningful for individuals who find themselves repeating painful relational patterns, struggling with emotional intensity, fearing abandonment, withdrawing from others, or feeling uncertain about how they are experienced in relationships.

A Psychodynamic Approach to Group Therapy

Psychodynamic group therapy is not simply a place to talk about problems. It is a structured therapeutic setting where members can begin to understand how their internal experiences shape the way they relate to others.

Within the group, feelings and reactions often emerge in real time. These moments can become important opportunities for reflection, helping members better understand the emotional patterns, defences, and relational expectations that may also appear outside of therapy.

The work is careful, reflective, and relational. Rather than offering quick solutions, the group provides a consistent space where experiences can be thought about, spoken, and gradually understood.

Who This Group May Be Helpful For

Group psychodynamic therapy may be appropriate for individuals who experience:

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Emotional intensity or instability

  • Fear of rejection or abandonment

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Patterns of withdrawal or disconnection

  • Challenges with identity or self-understanding

  • Repeated interpersonal conflict

  • Feelings of emptiness, shame, or loneliness

  • Borderline-level personality organization or related relational struggles

The group is intended for individuals who are interested in understanding themselves more deeply within the context of relationships.

Group Structure

This is a small, closed psychodynamic therapy group structured within a framework developed through the University of Alberta Day Treatment Program tradition.

Because the group is closed, members commit to participating for the full 12-week period. This structure supports consistency, trust, and the gradual development of meaningful therapeutic work among group members.

Intake and Upcoming Groups

Participation in group therapy requires an intake process to help determine whether the group is an appropriate fit. This allows time to discuss your concerns, goals, and whether the structure of the group will support your therapeutic needs.

For information about intake, availability, and upcoming group dates, please contact Daffodil Psychology.

If you are seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships, and the patterns that emerge in connection with others, group psychodynamic therapy may offer a meaningful place to begin.
